It took me a lot longer to get to this book than I originally planned. As I said of its predecessor, The Crystal Cave
, fantasy is not a genre I am usually drawn to, but I loved this book and The Crystal Cave
Stewart puts a lot of effort into melding legend with history, and because of this the story is tempered so that it does not lean too far into the fantastic. The play between kingdoms and power takes the forefront, leaving magical enchantments in the wings (although Merlin's ability to "see" is of the utmost importance, but that is passive).
