The Crystal Cave (The Arthurian Saga, Book 1)

The Crystal Cave - Mary Stewart Fantasy is not my favorite genre of fiction. Nevertheless, I burned through this book because it really ended up drawing me into the story. I was first put off by the author's writing style after finishing the more terse writing style of a mystery novel, but as I got a couple hours into it, I settled into the flow of her language.

The thing I liked the most was how Stewart made Merlin more human than the Merlin of legend. His "magic" was merely the application of his knowledge from a number of teachers. In this book, he was a scientist, really. However, he was plagued by visions by a god (or God, by the end of the story as he comes to believe there is but one god).

I will try the next book in the four-book series sometime in the next few months.
